PL Myths and Realities
Myth: Plain language means "dumbing down" the message.
Reality: Plain language means clarifying and fine-tuning language: a potentially difficult task.
Myth:Organizations can achieve plain language by training their employees.
Reality: Training can help, but everyone (including senior managers) must participate.Typically, organizations must also develop a communications infrastructure, such as establishing guidelines and managing the review process.
Myth: Plain language can hurt an organization's integrity and legal protection.
Reality: Plain language fosters stronger organizational work flow; accelerates the writing process; enhances the professional quality of the message (even to industry insiders); and increases the likelihood the message is transparent, legal, and ethical.
